Vaisakhi, Gravesend, 18/04/26
Vaisakhi in Gravesend is not just a religious festival, it is a celebration of the town’s multicultural identity. People from all walks of life join in the festivities, reflecting on values of equality and shared humanity. The crowds are always in their thousands as the parade winds its way through the town centre starting and finishing at the Guru Nanak Dardbar Gurdwara, one of the largest Sikh temples in Europe. A display of the Sikh martial art of Gatka took place after the Vaisakhi parade. The swordsmanship on display was spellbinding. Gravesend may be a bit rough around the edges but it’s days like today that make me proud to call it home.
