Shut Down Technion, Euston Road, London 22/04/26
Activists gathered outside The Shaw Theatre on Euston Road where Technion were holding a fundraiser. Staff at the Theatre had refused to work this event so external staff had to be brought in for the event. Technion is deeply entwined with the Israeli military industrial complex.
From the outset there was a huge and unwaranted police presence for a peaceful demonstration, with the protesters constrained by barriers and officers on all sides. It would have remained that way if the Met police had not decided to make an arrest using undue and unwarranted force. At least twenty officers steamed into the protest area knocking people aside to get to their target. That was followed with yet more aggression towards protesters on at least two occasions and another two arrests. As protesters were crushed against the barriers facing onto the Euston Road it’s a miracle no one was injured.
As the protest ended and protesters began to disperse towards Euston Station the group was flanked by two lines of the Met who clearly had it in mind to make further arrests. Sure enough another three unduly violent arrests were made as the group crossed the Euston Road and moved towards the station.
From the outset it was clear by the overly heavy police presence that the orders were to keep protesters as far away from the Theatre as possible and shut it down as quickly as possible. The powers on high obviously didn’t want those donating to be made too uncomfortable or be confronted by protesters calling out their complicity in genocide.
