An emergency rally was held outside the Foreign Office to demand diplomatic intervention to secure Dr Abu Safiya’s immediate release and urgent medical care.

Dr Hussam Abu Safiya has been arbitrarily detained in Israeli jails for over 18 months without charge or trial  His only crime is refusing to leave his patients whilst under heavy Israeli bombardment at the Kamal Adwan Hospital in Northern Gaza.  He has suffered continual beatings, torture, starvation and other mistreatment at the hands of the Israeli Prison Service.  He has been held in a 1m x 1m cell in Rakevet detention centre, an underground section beneath the Ayalon prison complex.  During the last visit by his lawyer Dr Abu Safiya expressed his fear that this may be the last time he is seen alive.  Reports from his lawyer are horrifying and indicate that his life is at imminent risk.

It is beyond comprehension that a paediatrician who has dedicated his life to saving others can be treated this way whilst our government looks on doing nothing but issuing mealy mouthed, meaningless statements.
